Local Pharmacist Attends Compounding Training Class
Ball Ground, Georgia – November 21, 2008: Jeff Richardson, of Ball Ground Pharmacy recently attended a four-day pharmacy compounding training course in Houston, Texas. Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) hosted pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from the United States and Canada at its hands-on training class, which provided 2.0 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing education credits or 20 contact hours. Compounding is the pharmacy method of custom-preparing medications to meet each prescriber’s and patient’s individual needs.
At PCCA’s training course, Jeff compounded a number of dosage forms including gels, lip balms, topical and capsules. Different flavorings were taster tested and multiple options for medications were presented.
“Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths,” says Jeff. “With a physician’s prescription, a compounding pharmacist can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, and add flavor to it to make it more palatable. The pharmacist also can prepare the medication using several unique delivery systems, such as a lozenge, lollipop, or transdermal gel. Preparing these customized medications allows compounding pharmacists to achieve their ultimate goal: to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic outcome.”
Headquartered in Houston, Texas since 1981, PCCA provides compounding pharmacists with ACPE-accredited training classes and seminars, fine pharmaceuticals, equipment, devices, flavors, as well as technical, financial and marketing consulting to help them compound unique dosage forms. PCCA has more than 3,400 independent pharmacist members in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
